Disabled access

The Alicante consulate is located on the 6th floor of a building which has lift access. Wheelchairs fit into the lift but there is no additional space for the carer to accompany the wheelchair user. Wheelchair users who are concerned about how to access the consulate should call the consulate first to ensure they are given any additional assistance needed.

How to find us

By car: approach the city along the coast road N332 or if approaching by motorway take the exit “Alicante Norte/Avenida Denia”. When you reach the marina, you will find an underground car park, and the consulate is 5 minutes walk from there.

By tram: get off at the “Mercado” stop and exit onto the Rambla Méndez Núñez. Walk down this street until you see the consulate building, which is on your left.

By bus: the bus station is located 15 minutes walk from the consulate. When you exit the bus station, turn right and continue until you reach the Rambla Méndez Núñez on your left. Turn onto the Rambla Méndez Núñez and walk up until you see the consulate on your right. Alternatively, take a taxi from the taxi rank located outside the bus station.

By train: the train station is located 20 minutes walk from the consulate. Ask for directions at the tourist information office which is located at the train station or alternatively take a taxi from the taxi rank located outside the train station.

Mosquito advice

DEET

DEET (chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the active ingredient in many repellent products. It is widely used to repel biting pests such as mosquitoes and ticks. Every year, an estimated one-third of the U.S. population use DEET to protect them from mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile Virus, the Zika virus or malaria and tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Products containing DEET currently are available to the public in a variety of liquids, lotions, sprays, and impregnated materials (e.g., towelettes, roll on). Formulations registered for direct application to human skin contain from 5 to 99% DEET. Except for a few veterinary uses, DEET is registered for use by consumers, and it is not used on food.

DEET is designed for direct application to people’s skin to repel insects. Rather than killing them, DEET works by making it hard for these biting bugs to smell us. After it was developed by the U.S. Army in 1946, DEET was registered for use by the general public in 1957. Approximately 120 products containing DEET are currently registered with EPA by about 30 different companies.

To optimize protection against mosquitoes  reduce the risk of diseases they transmit:

  • Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and socks.
  • Treat clothing with permethrin or purchase pretreated clothing.
  • Permethrin-treated clothing will retain repellent activity through multiple washes.
  • Repellents used on skin can also be applied to clothing but provide shorter duration of protection (same duration as on skin) and must be reapplied after laundering.
  • Apply lotion, liquid, or spray repellent to exposed skin.
  • For Mosquitoes Ensure adequate protection during times of day when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya vector mosquitoes bite mainly from dawn to dusk.
  • Malaria, West Nile, and Japanese encephalitis vector mosquitoes bite mainly from dusk to dawn.
  • Use common sense. Reapply repellents as protection wanes and mosquitoes start to bite.
